Alabaster is a mineral which formed in the Volterra territory around 6-7 million years ago. Alabaster is a calcium sulphate dihydrate, its chemical formula is CaSO4 2H2O. It is found in compacted, egg-shaped blocks of different sizes called “arnioni” or ellipsoids which are extracted from open-pit mines or underground mines.

Every mine generates alabaster with different appearance and texture, due to different chemical composition of the soil. Varieties with less inclusions are white, more or less transparent; varieties with inclusions of clay and metal oxides generate “bardiglio” greyish, veined alabasters. Other color shades such as amber, yellow and light red are due to metal oxides and metal hydroxides, especially iron. Alabaster is very exquisite but also very delicate, so it needs to be handled with great care and it can only be processed with natural products.

Alabaster processing is surely one of the most ancient, but still alive, handicrafts. The bond between this mineral and the community dates back to the foundation of the city. Etruscan people used to settle where they could find lands and materials suitable for their mausoleums, so they chose alabaster mines. The creativity and manufacturing skills of Volterra’s artisans makes alabaster processing so unique. Their products are the result of a manufacturing process which often requires the work of several different craftsmen before entering the market.

“Cooperativa Artieri” was established in Volterra in 1895, its original name was “Cooperativa Industriale Magazzino di lavori in alabastro”.

It then changed its name into “Artieri” in 1908 after the Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio visited Volterra: he was the one who first called them “Artieri”.
